EditorÕs Introductory Note:

Thank you to the crew of neighbors who helped out in June at the work party in Halcyon Commons in preparation for next Tuesday nightÕs big National Night Out event in the park (see item 1)! We very much appreciated the refreshments courtesy of Whole Foods Market and coffee courtesy of Starbucks!

What weÕve learned over the years is that the most important thing we can do to foster neighborhood safety on multiple levels is getting to know our neighbors so we can all look out for one another to prevent crime and to provide mutual assistance after a disaster like a big earthquake. The first two items in this monthÕs brief newsletter offer ways to have fun while building community and enhancing neighborhood safety.

HereÕs to a great summer in the Halcyon neighborhood!

EditorÕs note: WeÕre anticipating another fun summer evening in the park, with delicious treats, a chance to meet neighbors (the most important ingredient of our neighborhood watch), and visits from police, firefighters, and city officials. This event is a crucial part of our neighborhood watch program, so please mark it on your calendars, bundle up, and come on out!

2. Mini HNA CERT Emergency Preparedness Drill on National Night Out, Tues., 8/7, 6:20-8 p.m.

Halcyon Neighborhood Association CERT is pairing National Night Out Against Crime with a simple mini-CERT drill. In an actual emergency, Halcyon Neighborhood residents are asked to put something GREEN in the window or door to signify no one in the household needs help and then to assemble at Halcyon Commons. For the mini-drill:

* At 6:20 p.m. and again at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, the evening of National Night Out, an HNA CERT volunteer will drive through the neighborhood honking a car horn to signal the start of the drill.

* We ask residents to place a green item in their window or door (the fluorescent green flyer most of you received works fine), telling first responders and CERT that they donÕt need help; and then . . .

* Go to Halcyon Commons (Halcyon at Prince), check in at the CERT table as though youÕd just left your home after a disaster, and . . .

* Enjoy ice cream, neighbors, and community at NNO!

ThatÕs all! Simple, but it will help anchor these basic steps for all of us.

3. Whole Foods Market News: Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Fri., 9/14, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

EditorÕs note: Received from Whole Foods Market.

Next Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, September 14, 8:15-9:00 a.m.

Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)

These meetings are held at the Community Table at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss with HNA reps and nearby neighbors. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the group below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
